The GottaGo Room: A Fake-Escaping-A-Room Thingy

Escape rooms: everyone's favorite activity to do when you're going to a birthday party hosted by a virgin or when your company is forcing you to go under the threat of contract termination. Escape rooms famously simulate everyone's favorite real-life feelings of being stuck in a room with a bunch of strangers, being forced to do puzzles, and having thoughts that if something goes slightly wrong you might die. How are you going to figure out how to escape Under St Marks Theater? Here's a hint: try to solve the clues! On Wednesday January 10th at 9 PM, Under St. Marks will be hosting The GottaGo Room: A Fake Escaping-A-Room Thing: Special Roomier Edition, an immersive comedy show slash fake-ass escape room. In the show, you ("you" meaning whoever is reading this right now) will go inside Under St. Marks Theater and try to leave Under St. Marks Theater as once you get to the theater, no one will be allowed to leave until the puzzle is over. Unless there's a real fire. Then we're leaving there as fast as possible. The GottaGo Room was performed for a bunch of British people at the renowned 2023 Edinburgh Fringe Festival. During its successful nightly three week run and one sold out show, one review said "This is the weirdest show at Fringe...that we loved every second of." This SPECIAL ROOMIER EDITION director's cut will include an extra five minutes that was cut for time so we didn't cut off Cambridge University's 11:30 PM Van Gogh show. The show comes from the mind and laptop of Jason Weitzman who Time Out New York called "funny and inventive," "[a] brilliant gonzo performer," and "he's going to exert himself to the point of danger." So put on your Thinking Hats, your Puzzle-solving Pants, and your Guessing, uh, Guess pants and come to the show where if you fail you may never leave the Under St. Marks Theater again. FASTER

The pace of change is messing with our heads, and to psychotherapist, improviser and storyteller Jude Treder-Wolff, comedy is part of the cure. Through true stories about trying to understand her partner’s opposite approach to change, she frames a narrative about the impact of constant uncertainty as the pace of change picks up speed and transforms the world faster - and more often - than our brains are built to process. Sonnets from a Sin-Eater

Sin-eating is a ritual older than Jesus. It’s been practiced across the globe, but the iteration I will be practicing comes from 17th century Wales. In essence, you eat a meal off the chest of a dead person, and, in doing so, you absorb their sins. The deceased can thus transition peacefully, free from the weight of their mortal wrongdoings. Calgary has not yet died, so instead of eating off her corpse, I’ll be meditating on her spirit—and internalizing her sins—as I eat this Taco Bell. *** K is a recent grad looking for fast cash and moral purity. TransMasculine Cabaret, Starring Vulva Va-Voom

"TragiComic trans-identifying confessional" and "obscene, irreverent, maniacal burlesque comedian" might seem like incompatible themes, but Vulva Va-Voom has combined much stranger elements onstage. Creepier, stickier, Lovecraftian elements. Gritty nightclub headliner Vulva (they/them) has inhabited some bizarrely imaginative world-building over the years...but that world is still impacted by politics and culture. Who gets to define whether someone is a drag queen, drag king, or an in-between? Vulva has mostly appeared hyper-femme throughout their onstage song-and-dance career...but why? (Mostly a matter of practicality, given that spirit-gummed facial hair and latex nipples are indescribably annoying to scrape off at 4am.) But does femme presentation invalidate nonbinary credibility? As the comedian executes a live “female drag to male drag” transition onstage, they explore labels, identity, and their own real-world experience. More introspective and intimate than Va-Voom & Co.’s usual off-the-charts level of raucous debauchery, this piece combines Vaudeville with Weimar, vulnerability with absurdity, authenticity with farce, and— as usual— absinthe with uppers. See www.VulvaVaVoom.com for artist statement, portfolio, and vulgar photographs. THE IMPORTANCE OF BEING ANXIOUS

After winning the Encore Producers Award at HOLLYWOOD FRINGE in Los Angeles this past summer, and selling out its run at LONDON’S CAMDEN FRINGE to great reviews, Hal Cantor’s THE IMPORTANCE OF BEING ANXIOUS brings the angst to where it truly belongs: New York City.  Featuring the voice of RICKI LAKE, Hal’s raw, honest, if often painfully hilarious look at himself, is a coming-of-middle-age comedy about coming out late (some might say ‘very late’), among other anxiety-producing triggers and tribulations. Directed by award-winning London theater artist, Ralph Bogard, THE IMPORTANCE OF BEING ANXIOUS — by its very form — demonstrates theater’s unique ability to reflect life back to us, with humor and heart. And lots of gay sex. More ANXIOUS details, including trailers, can be found at: http://www.AnxiousPlay.com ****REVIEWS: LA and London are crazy about ANXIOUS!**** "There are lots of laughs in Hal Cantor’s THE IMPORTANCE OF BEING ANXIOUS…It’s genuinely down to earth. And, a hell of a tell-all. Cantor practically inverts inside-to-out in a glorious, self-effacing expose of himself...The show is as complex as Cantor is as a person...And this is what makes this production singularly unique." —Tracey Paleo, GIA ON THE MOVE (LA) "What we have here is a one man show that is open and heartfelt, biographical and vulnerable...Cantor has clearly thought about his subject matter in a deep and perceptive way, and is a funny guy.” —Karl O' Doherty, THE REVIEWS HUB: LONDON “…polished, technically seamless and upbeat in energy…Ralph Bogard’s direction keeps Cantor moving…Cantor’s candor and considered approach to the subject do make for an often entertaining and insightful hour.” — James Humphrey, THE UP COMING (London) Please note that all New York City Fringe shows begin at the time stated on your reservation and that we cannot guarantee late seating. Joy Ride

For over a decade, the Brandt family minivan saw many a carpool, many a round of license plate bingo, and many a fast-food run. And while this 2006 Toyota Sienna’s days on the road have long run their course, the car still manages to serve as an excellent vehicle… for storytelling. Join musical comedian Meredith Brandt as she shares stories from her childhood minivan, told entirely through song parodies inspired by the albums that were forever stuck in the car’s once-high-tech multi-disc CD player.   Written and performed by Meredith Brandt (@merbrandt, www.meredithbrandt.com) Directed by Samantha Evans (www.samantha-evans.com) Please note that all New York City Fringe shows begin at the time stated on your reservation and that we cannot guarantee late seating. Brokeneck Girls: The Murder Ballad Musical

Brokeneck Girls: The Murder Ballad Musical is a dark comedy based on the tradition of violence against women in folk music and the true crimes that inspired it. The social commentary delivers fast-paced laughter while addressing issues of class, race, gender, and power. Revenge, redemption, free will and the conflict between good and evil unfold unexpectedly in a story focused on three women who bond over music and share increasingly outrageous secrets. Eventually the truth comes out- the desire to survive has driven all of them to become what they fear most. The score, performed by the NYC-based, folk noir band Brokeneck Girls, features songs of murder, mayhem and dirty deeds spiced with juicy gossip and facts about real people and events in the songs. Loyalty, murder, quick wit, and banjo jokes tell the hilarious and unflinching story of hidden history and the beginning of cultural obsession with true crime. The Moth Project Presents MUSIC/PICTURES/WORDS

David Attenborough meets Laurie Anderson in The MOTH PROJECT, a new production from Peter Kiesewalter, Grammy-nominated creator of the East Village Opera Company ("Highbrow and brilliant!" - New York Magazine). Blending music, family history and moth lore, The MOTH PROJECT brings art and science together in entirely original and unexpected ways. Peter Kiesewalter (keyboard) and Whitney La Grange (violin) perform before a large screen displaying a stunning visual tour of moths and the fascinating world they inhabit. Using macro photography, slow motion video and dynamic motion graphics, these images are projected over the performers -- enveloping them and transporting them -- along with the audience -- into a strange and remarkable world. Do you yearn for the experience of seeing The Bard's works for the first time? Then celebrate the glad tidings of As You Will and our Unscripted Shakespeare Show! These Shakespearean Scholars are here to present all the monumental works the immortal Bard would've written if he hadn't gone and died. With just the title given by the audience the players of As You Will bring a Shakespearean comedy to life complete with Shakspeare's themes, language, poetic verse, and some scholarly footnotes thrown in for good measure. As You Will have performed such classics as "Eight Merry Spiders," "That Doth Not Go There," "1601: A Space Odyssey'' and though those shows will never be seen again, there’s always a Shakespearean world premiere in our makeshift Globe Theatre.

The score, performed by the NYC-based, folk noir band Brokeneck Girls, features songs of murder, mayhem and dirty deeds spiced with juicy gossip and facts about real people and events in the songs. Odd Salon NYC: Blunder

Join us for six tales of awkward actions and historical hiccups, scientific slips and military miscalculations, societal faux-paux’s and groan inducing misjudgments, we’ll see you next time at Odd Salon NYC: BLUNDER!Curated by New Co-Producer Olivia Owre-Bell!Stories and Speakers TBDWednesday May 8th Doors at 6:30pm; Curtain at 7:00pm$25 In-Person$20 Watch From Home Odd Salon curates cocktail hour lectures highlighting strange-but-true stories from history, science, art, and adventure, live on stage, over cocktails. We bring experts and enthusiastic amateurs together to explore history’s overlooked and under-told stories, from legends of lost cities to masters of art forgery, engineering failures to murderous sideshow performers, daring heists, questionable taxidermy, and tales of epic revenge. Sometimes with stick figures. Founded in San Francisco, in 2014 by Annetta Black, Tre Balchowsky, and Rachel James, Odd Salon is inspired by the salonnières of the Enlightenment, the illustrated lectures of the Victorian period, and a strong desire to tell weird stories in good company. After several years of hosting salons in San Francisco, in 2018 we expanded to add a new chapter in New York City. We are a community project, centered around a Fellowship of speakers and an extended family of Members, and we have partnered with amazing organizations including the California Historical Society, the Long Now Foundation, the California Academy of Sciences, the tall ships of the Grey’s Harbor Historical Seaport, and the Exploratorium science museum. As a community-focused and mission-driven organization dedicated to the diffusion of unusual knowledge, we are proud to be a membership supported, fiscally sponsored project of the InterCulture Foundation, a 501c3 non-profit organization.

As You Will

Friends, foes, fools! Do you ever bemoan the fact that the 884,647 words William Shakespeare wrote have been performed already?
